Schuurman Communications was founded in 2013 by Betsy Schuurman, a fundraising consultant with more than 10 years experience in the non-profit industry, including extensive experience in prospect research, prospect management, pipeline development, proposal/grant writing, communications, member relations, and relational databases including Raiser’s Edge and BSR Advance.

Betsy began her career in fundraising working for the University of Maryland, Baltimore where she was responsible for updating the BSR Advance database as well as generating leads and prospect profiles for the university’s professional schools, the University of Maryland Medical Centre, and other affiliated institutions and centres. At the end of her tenure there, she conducted a review of the 435 prospect profiles she wrote over four years and she found that the University received approximately $5,133,000 in contributions and pledges from those prospects subsequent to her research.

As the Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario’s Volunteer Association since 2011, Betsy manages the Board’s communications with the Association’s 500 members, including the Annual Report. As Chair of the Communications Committee, she also produces the biannual Voluntales newsletter and update the volunteer website and social media. As Chair of the 50th Anniversary Committee, Betsy is currently responsible for planning commemorative events that honor and celebrate our volunteers.

Betsy takes particular pride in helping organizations find the funding they need to fulfill their mission.
